Applicants are highly encouraged to submit (and complete, if possible) their application by the upcoming deadline to be considered for maximum scholarship funding. Applications received after the deadline are welcome and will be reviewed on a space-available basis.

Required application components

The following items are required as part of our holistic application process. Please note, however, that the admission committee reserves the right to request additional documents, such as letters of recommendation, to make an informed decision.

Applicants must submit an online Graduate Application in order to be considered for admission.

Applicants are required to submit an application essay. You may upload it to your online application or send it afterwards as an attachment to graddocs@msmu.edu.

Essay Prompt: Please write a 2-3 page, double-spaced essay about a current problem or issue in education that is important to you. Describe the issue and a possible solution. Include information about your background, interests, and aspirations as they relate to the issue you are addressing.

After submitting your application, please arrange for official transcripts from the college or university that ultimately conferred your undergraduate degree – no need to submit official transcripts from community colleges – unofficial copies will suffice, unless you wish to have courses taken at such institutions considered for transfer or evaluation for waiver of certain exams or requirements.

Important: for transcripts to be considered official, they must be issued by the institution and sent directly to Mount Saint Mary’s University in a sealed envelope or electronically. Copies of transcripts mailed or hand-delivered by applicants will be considered unofficial.

Official transcripts may be sent to Mount Saint Mary’s University in one of two ways:

  • Postal Delivery:
    Mount Saint Mary’s University
    Office of Graduate Admissions
10 Chester Pl. Los Angeles, CA 90007
  • Electronic Delivery:
Please instruct your institution to submit secure, electronically-delivered transcript to graddocs@msmu.edu.

Once an application is complete, applicants will be invited to meet with a faculty advisor to discuss academic and professional goals, ensure such goals align with the program the applicant intends to pursue and determine possible eligibility for additional grants or scholarships.

Required state application components

It is highly recommended that applicants fulfill the Subject Matter Requirement before they start the program. However, students may start without having completed the requirement. Please be advised, however, the SMR must be completed before they can engage in student-teaching and apply to receive a credential from the CTCC. Applicants can choose from following options to fulfill SMR, before or during the program:

  • California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSETs)
  • Degree major
  • Subject matter prep program letter
  • Coursework
  • Combination of coursework and exams.

You will select an option on your application. If you select the “coursework only” or “combination” options, a faculty advisor will review your transcripts and courses for SMR. Coursework submitted to satisfy SMR will be evaluated against the Subject Matter Domains established by the CTCC. Please visit our SMR webpage for more information on the type of exams and coursework that can satisfy SMR.

Upon admission, candidates will receive an email from the Education Department indicating whether they have satisfied SMR or if they need further review. A full review and analysis of coursework may take up to one semester to complete. Therefore, it is recommended you take one or more CSET subtests in the interim, in case your coursework does not meet SMR. Official transcripts must be submitted before an evaluation can be performed. Coursework evaluations may require additional transcripts, catalog descriptions, or course syllabi, to confirm coverage of required subject areas.

Please note that admission into the program does not indicate, nor guarantee, that the student will, or has the potential, to successfully meet SMR requirements, which may preclude attainment of credential. The student assumes full responsibility for satisfying Subject Matter Requirements as required by the CTCC, as well as all costs associated with course tuition and matriculation during their tenure in the program.

A certificate of clearance (CofC) is required for students enrolled in our educator preparation programs. The certificate of clearance is issued by the CTCC. Learn more at the for instructions on how to obtain a certificate clearance.

Applicants may send a copy of the actual certificate or email confirmation from the CTCC indicating receipt of the certificate via email at to graddocs@msmu.edu.

Each applicant must sign and date a Candidate Disposition Statement found on the online application. You will review and acknowledge the statement and dispositions before submitting the online application.

All applicants must submit a copy of TB test results taken within the last 2 years. A copy of TB test results can be sent as a scanned copy via email to graddocs@msmu.edu.

GRE
The Graduate Record Examination is NOT required.

Decisions are made and communicated 4-6 weeks from the time your application is complete.
