The now allows applicants to teacher education programs to submit test scores and/or evidence of sufficient coursework to fulfill their Subject Matter Competency Requirement (SMR), in lieu or in addition to the CSET exam. 

All Mount Saint Mary's University Teacher Education graduate program applicants may choose from the one of the following options to fulfill the Subject Matter Requirement (SMR): 

  • California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET);
  • Degree major;
  • Subject matter prep program letter;
  • Coursework; or
  • Combination of exam scores and coursework.

You will have an opportunity to select an option on your online application. All test scores and/or evidence of coursework must be submitted as part of your program application.

Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET)

The CSET option allows you to complete the Subject Matter Competency through completion of an exam. Candidates must meet the minimum scores required on the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) to satisfy this requirement.

CSET: Multiple Subjects

Social Science

Foundational-Level Mathematics

Foundational-Level Science

The CSET completed must be in one of the subject areas listed above for either Multiple Subject or Single Subject candidates. 

  • Candidates must meet the minimum scores required on the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) Examination.
  • Candidates must provide the program with their official PDF score report listing subtests and date completed.

Degree Major

The academic major option allows you to complete the Subject Matter Competency through successful completion of an academic major in the subject you are pursuing.

Academic Degrees Accepted:

  • Liberal Studies degrees OR
  • Liberal Studies degrees that includes a focus or concentration in the title (e.g., Liberal Studies: Urban Education or Liberal Studies: Elementary Education)

The applicant’s major must be an exact degree/credential match in one of the subjects identified in Education Code §44257(a). These subjects are:

  • Agriculture
  • Art
  • Business
  • Dance 
  • English
  • World Language (in any of the languages for which there is a credential)
  • Health Science
  • Home Economics
  • Industrial & Technology Education
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Science (including Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience or Earth and Space Science and Physics)
  • Social Science
  • Theater

The academic degree major must be in one of the subject areas listed above for either Multiple Subject or Single Subject candidates. 

  • Candidates whose majors are not listed above are not eligible for this option at this time.
  • However, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing is seeking to expand the array of majors that may be used under this option through emergency regulations.
  • Master’s or doctoral degree completed by a candidate in the exact area of the credential being sought also count as verification of subject matter competence.
  • The law does not limit the recency of the degree earned so candidates may have earned their degree at any point in the past. 

Subject Matter Prep Program Letter

The Subject Matter Prep Program option allows you to complete the Subject Matter Competency through a signed letter from your undergraduate institution stating you completed their Subject Matter Prep Program in the content area for which you are pursuing a credential.

  • Some undergraduate institutions offer a Subject Matter Prep Program as part of their undergraduate experience or Bachelor’s degree.
  • Subject Matter Prep Programs must be approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
  • Please contact your undergraduate program to determine if you completed one as part of your education with them.

  • The letter needs to be on the undergraduate institution’s letterhead.
  • The letter needs to state in which subject matter content area the prep program was completed.
  • The letter needs to state when the subject matter prep program was completed.
  • The letter needs to be signed by the appropriate university representative.

Completed Prep Program:

  • If completed at time of admissions application, please submit as part of your application.

In Progress Prep Program:

  • If the program is still in progress at time of admission application, please submit a letter from your Subject Matter Prep Program stating that you are in progress and when they anticipate your completion.
  • Once completed, please request an updated letter stating your completion and submit to gradprograms@msmu.edu.

Coursework Only

The courses option allows you to complete the Subject Matter Competency through completion of coursework. Candidates must meet the CTC’s guidelines for coursework to satisfy this requirement.

  • Earned a grade of “C-” or better (“Pass is acceptable) in the qualifying coursework
  • Taken at a regionally accredited college or university (Community College is acceptable)
  • Must address each of the domains of the subject matter requirements for the credential you are pursuing
