The Eighth Annual Graduate Nursing Research Poster Symposium earlier this semester looked a little different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with virtual Zoom presentations from graduate nursing students who shared their year-long thesis research findings on topics such as workforce burnout and nurse turnover.

This year, 16 Master of Science in Nursing students, all set to finish their studies in 2021, showcased their research findings before five MSN alums who served as judges and selected the top three poster winners.

The top three poster winners were:

First place 鈥 鈥淭each-Back Method and Hospital Readmission,鈥 by Jasper Sanchez, BSN, RN, CCRN-K, CNRN, SCRN.

Second place 鈥 鈥淗ome Health Care Service Intervention and the 30-Day Readmission Rate in High-Risk Post-CABG Patients,鈥 by Kristi Min-Kim, BSN, PHN, AMC-RN.

Third place 鈥 鈥淭he Relationship between Nurse Burnout and Nurse Self-Reporter Intent to Leave,鈥 by Anni Nazaryan, BSN, RN, PCCN, PHN.

Preparing for the symposium came with unprecedented challenges for the students because of the pandemic, says Dr. Tori Canillas-Dufau, the MSN thesis advisor who worked with the students throughout the yearlong process.

鈥淭here were delays in accessing data and analyzing the data and this was unique to the COVID situation,鈥 she says. 鈥淏ut this pandemic has hit our students in more ways than one, not even academically, but also because the students actually work in healthcare settings that have other priorities. Many of the students are working long hours in providing direct care to COVID patients and their families; so, I was extremely proud of them.鈥

The pandemic also brought forth very interesting findings, Canillas-Dufau adds. 鈥淪ome of the presenters looked at really timely topics such as nurse burnout and nurse resilience. We came to the conclusion that some of our findings were quite unique this year because of COVID.鈥

First-place presenter Jasper Sanchez said of his research that 鈥渋ncorporating the teach-back method to every education session has proven to improve knowledge retention, promote patient engagement, improve communication and validate patient understanding. As Benjamin Franklin said, 鈥楾ell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.鈥欌

鈥淢y thesis is to assist patients, families and the health organization with reducing readmission rates after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery,鈥 says Min-Kim. 鈥淭he result of my study showed that at-risk patients who received at least one home visit by home health care nurses had less than half the number of readmissions within 30 days compared to patients with similar demographic and medical conditions who did not receive the interventions.鈥

She said that Tori鈥檚 frequently cited phrase, 鈥淲hen eating an elephant, take one bite at a time,鈥 helped students from becoming overwhelmed with their projects. 鈥淚t turned out to be very true,鈥 Min-Kim explained. 鈥淭he journey of the thesis project was not easy, but it made me grateful for the accomplishment.鈥

The experience was similarly fulfilling for third-place presenter Nazaryan, who also commented on Tori鈥檚 elephant phrase. 鈥淧atience and perseverance are virtues,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 am grateful for this journey and opportunity.  Thank you to all my classmates and professors for their help and guidance in this incredible journey."
