CSJ pilgrimage to France led by President Ann McElaney-Johnson
In the footsteps of our FoundersEach year, several members of the Mount Saint Mary’s University community participate in our pilgrimage to France to explore the foundations of our heritage. Led by President Ann McElaney-Johnson, Mount Trustees, faculty, staff, alumnae, sisters and friends join together for 10 days to immerse ourselves in the historic sites of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
The tour begins in the beautiful lakeside town of Annecy before heading to Le Puy, where, in 1650, six women formed the first community of the Sisters of St. Joseph. The group then visits the sites of Mother St. John Fontbonne, who reestablished the sisters after the French Revolution. The pilgrimage continues to her family home in Bas-en-Basset and several small towns in the region, before the final stop in Lyon, where she is buried. Along the way the group meets many CSJs from France and around the world.
For information about our next pilgrimage, please contact Shannon Green at sgreen@msmu.edu.
Celebrating our Founders' history and traditions
CSJ WeekEach March, the Mount community celebrates our Founders' history and traditions during CSJ Week. Marked by a variety of events, we share the powerful mission and history of our sisters, honor our sisters of today and share our vision for the future.

Beyond Campus
In 1870, our sisters made a perilous journey from St. Louis to Tucson, Arizona, via California. Once there, they began their work to establish schools, hospitals and social service agencies that responded to the needs of the times.
Over the years these needs have evolved and changed, giving way to new ministries. Today, we are proud to be among the Los Angeles province鈥檚 sponsored ministries that continue to respond to the needs of the times here in California and beyond. To learn more about these ministries, visit their websites below.
Association of Colleges of the Sisters of St. Joseph
Additionally, Mount Saint Mary鈥檚 is an active member of the , an organization comprised of the nine Sister of St. Joseph colleges and universities. Through ACSSJ, we foster relationships between the colleges and offer opportunities such as the student exchange program, student pilgrimages and faculty development.
