The leap from high school to college is filled with both excitement and uncertainty. For Kimberly Cano-Ortiz ‘29, a first-generation student from downtown Los Angeles and a pre-nursing major at Mount Saint Mary’s, that transition became a lot smoother thanks to the (M)POWER jumpstart known as Summer Pathways. This six-week program introduces incoming first-year students to the academics, community and resources the University offers before they officially begin their first semester. This summer, 67 students participated in the program, gaining early exposure to college life while earning credit and making new friends.

“I was beyond thrilled that I got accepted [to the Mount]. It is the perfect place for me for many reasons,” Kimberly recalled.

“Summer Pathways helps students see themselves as college students from day one,” said Elizabeth Sturgeon, interim assistant provost, director of Summer Pathways, and Summer Pathways seminar instructor. “They leave the program with a clear understanding of the resources available to them and a strong sense of what it means to be part of the Mount community.”

Each student takes two courses: one academic class, and the Summer Pathways Seminar, which introduces them to campus life and the comprehensive services offered at the Mount. Students also participate in workshops with faculty, staff and guest speakers who share the many resources available to them — from academic advising and wellness to leadership and student engagement.

Beyond the classroom, the program creates opportunities for exploration and connection. This summer’s group visited Los Angeles landmarks including the Getty Center, the Natural History Museum, and the Hollywood Bowl. In addition, the students got to know their own campus through tours at Chalon, Doheny and the 国产传媒 Hollywood Studios.

Peer mentors, who are current Mount students, played a vital role throughout the six weeks by guiding participants, answering questions, and modeling what it looks like to succeed at the University. Kimberly formed a strong bond with her mentor, who also happens to be in the nursing program. “She gave me advice about how to start off strong, be prepared and ready for the classes ahead of me,” Kimberly said. “She also shared the best study spots on campus. Having her guidance was invaluable.”

The program also recognizes the practical needs of incoming students. Summer Pathways is offered at no cost, and provides five units of college credit, a $250 stipend, and daily access to resources that ease the financial and personal challenges of beginning college.

For Kimberly, the program did more than prepare her academically. It gave her a sense of belonging. “It definitely made it less intimidating to attend the University. The first day of classes, I knew my way around, I knew a few people, and I had friendly faces all over campus.”

She also shared that the fast pace of the program prepared her for the rigor of the nursing program ahead. “It allowed me to set high standards for myself, to be able to work at a quick pace and juggle multiple priorities. It prepared me for what’s ahead.”

When asked if she would recommend the program to future students, Kimberly didn’t hesitate: “Yes. It is a great opportunity to get to know the campus, learn about resources, meet your future classmates, as well as professors, and start your fall semester on the right foot.”

For Kimberly and her fellow participants, Summer Pathways reflects the heart of (M)POWER — an educational journey where students are empowered, supported and unstoppable.
