Mount Saint Mary’s University offers students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Our baccalaureate degree program offers emphases in Music Education, Music Performance, Music Industry, Music History and Pre-Music Therapy. Plus, our Music and Music Industry minors are great options for students who want to combine music with another major. 

BA in Music 

Music majors take core music classes in theory, music history, conducting, music technology, entrepreneurship, piano and performance ensembles. Core music classes are taught in a supportive environment with a student-to-faculty ratio that allows for greater student involvement. 

Students are also encouraged to choose from one of our established degree program emphases to get the most from their music educational experience at the Mount.

Emphases

Students are also encouraged to choose from one of our established degree program emphases to get the most from their music educational experience at the Mount.

With a Music Performance emphasis, you may choose between vocal or instrument performance. This emphasis is designed for students intending to pursue careers as performers or college instructors, along with any music student intending to move on to graduate studies. 

You鈥檒l earn your academic foundation by studying music theory and analysis, music history and much more. You鈥檒l gain performance experience in the classical, Broadway and jazz idioms. You鈥檒l rehearse and practice for many performance opportunities with ensemble and solo recitals as essential parts of your study plan. Individualized instruction is part of the Performance emphasis, along with full access to the Mount鈥檚 music labs and performance rooms.

With a Music Education emphasis, you鈥檒l prepare for your career as an educator while you expand your musical abilities. This is a perfect emphasis for students who enjoy working with children or teens, and want to strengthen our future through education, making a difference in the lives of others.  

This emphasis is built upon a classic liberal arts education. In addition, you will complete 国产传媒鈥檚 Secondary Teacher Preparation Program with coursework in the Music and Education departments. The Music Education emphasis prepares you for a California teaching license, the California Single Subject preliminary credential. 

Note: Acceptance into the Music Education program is based on your audition. The Music Education emphasis is completed in collaboration with the Education Department. 

 

With a Music History emphasis, you鈥檒l focus on the history and significance of musical traditions. You鈥檒l take courses in music theory, music history, applied music instruction and ensembles.  

This emphasis is designed for students intending to pursue careers as composers, performers or college instructors, along with any music student intending to move on to graduate studies.

The Music Industry emphasis offers a unique and innovative curriculum, combining interdisciplinary studies in music, business, film and media, with a focus on technology and entrepreneurship. This interdisciplinary program provides students with the fundamental tools necessary to establish themselves, adapt and succeed in an industry that is constantly changing. 

Note: Acceptance into the Music Industry program is based on your audition. 

The Pre-Music Therapy emphasis includes coursework in music and psychology. This concentration does not lead to licensing in Music Therapy but is preparation for further study in the field. Completion of the program qualifies students to enroll in a Music Therapy equivalency program. Completing a Music Therapy equivalency program will allow students to take the national exam needed to become a board-certified music therapist.

Minors

Music

A Music minor is a great option for a student who is passionate about music but chooses to major in another field. Our program aims to broaden and deepen a student’s understanding of the art of music and offers a good deal of flexibility. 

In addition, many students at 国产传媒 have a serious interest in music and participate in our ensembles, applied music lessons and general education music classes without pursuing either a major or minor. 

Music Industry

A minor in Music Industry is available to music, business and other majors who wish to gain and expand both theoretical and practical skills needed to work in the music industry. 
 
This minor will be especially attractive to both music students who want to acquire the business and legal knowledge necessary for success in the music industry and to business students who need a greater understanding and appreciation of music to pursue careers in the music industry.
