Admission Requirements

Admission requirements

To be considered for admission to the Music degree program at Mount Saint Mary’s University, you will need to successfully complete the following requirements:

*ALL APPLICATIONS AND INTERVIEWS WILL BE SUBMITTED ONLINE.*

  1. Complete your application to Mount Saint Mary’s University.
  2. Successfully complete all other requirements as established by 国产传媒.
    • Your application for admission to 国产传媒 has been approved.
    • Your FAFSA is on file at the Office of Admission’s Financial Aid Office.
  3. Complete your Music Department Application Form
  4. Submit a video recording of your audition along with your application. You will be asked to provide a YouTube link of your audition in your application. (Please scroll down for Audition Requirements).
  5. Provide a letter of recommendation from your music instructor that attests to your potential in music. Please have your reference email the required letter of recommendation directly to the Music Department care of Dr. Kim Nguyen Tran at knguyentran@msmu.edu. Receipt of the letter is required before the online interview is scheduled.
  6. Schedule and complete your online interview with designated department personnel.
  7. You will be sent a link to sign up for the Theory Placement exam, following your notification of acceptance into the Music Department.

Auditions are required for admission to the Music major and minor, and are a determining factor in the awarding of scholarship funds. 

Audition repertoire requirements

  • Prepare three to five minutes’ worth of music for your audition. Consider etudes or solo excerpts from works you have played for lessons, regional tryouts, solo and ensemble, or other performances.
  • If you are a vocalist, we suggest two selections in contrasting styles from memory, one of which is in a foreign language (aria, art songs, folk songs and musical theatre selections).
  • If you play piano, brass, woodwinds or strings, please perform two contrasting selections from the standard repertoire.
  • If you play percussion (concert band), please perform one selection on snare and one selection on either mallets or timpani.

Students demonstrate their musical talent to Music Department faculty. And we learn more about your music goals, and how you see yourself contributing to life within the Music Department.

A successful audition can lead to financial awards up to and including a full-tuition scholarship.

Audition video recording instructions

  1. Make sure your repertoire meets the audition repertoire guidelines for your particular instrument/voice.
  2. Recordings should be recent and must be unedited, with each selection performed in one take.
  3. Please make sure to state your name, instrument/voice, emphasis you are applying for and the composer and title of each piece you are performing in the video.
    • You must submit ONE video with all of the audition material.
  4. Upload your audition video to YouTube
    • Under Title, include your full name and instrument/voice
    • Under Audience, Select "No, it's not made for kids"
    • Under Visibility, select "Unlisted"
    • Copy and paste the link to your audition video in the form and submit!
