Work-Study

Federal Work-Study provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses.

A work-study award gives students the opportunity to have an on-campus job to earn money to support their education. The money earned through a work-study job goes directly into a student's bank account, giving them the means to contribute to any education expenses — whether that’s tuition, books, living expenses, etc.

Work-study may be awarded as part of a student's financial aid offer upon completion of the FAFSA.

Once enrolled, students can work with the Financial Aid Office and the Office of Career and Professional Development to find a campus job.

Loans

Loans are a way for you to responsibly borrow money to assist in financing your education. Upon graduation, you will start a loan repayment plan that can be based on your salary. At Mount Saint Mary’s, we offer a number of federal loans to help supplement scholarships, grants and work study awards.

A Federal Direct Loan is a loan issued by the Department of Education to help eligible students pay for college and related educational expenses. To apply for a Federal Direct Loan, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Federal Direct Loans are low-interest loans. There are two types of Direct Loans for students:

  • Direct Subsidized Loans: Subsidized loans are available to undergraduate students with financial need. The U.S. Department of Education pays the interest on these loans while the student is enrolled in school and for a 6-month grace period after leaving school.
  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans: Unsubsidized loans are available to undergraduate and graduate students regardless of financial need. The borrower is responsible for all interest accrued during school and beyond.

For more information on Federal Direct Loans, including borrowing limits and eligibility, .

Parent PLUS Loans are federal loans that parents of dependent undergraduate students can use to help pay for college.

Eligible parents can up to the cost of attendance minus other financial aid. Once the loan is disbursed, repayment begins; payments can be deferred while the student is enrolled at least half-time.

Federal Nursing Student Loans are available to undergraduate students enrolled in the BSN program who demonstrate financial need. Students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) AND are enrolled in the Nursing program will be considered for this loan.

When available, Federal Nursing Loans are interest free until nine months after students are no longer enrolled. You must be enrolled at least half-time, which is six units, and must be in the Traditional Undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Loan amounts are based on the grade level in the program. The interest rate is fixed at 5%. Federal Nursing loans require a master promissory note as well as entrance and exit counseling. Repayment begins nine months after graduation, withdrawal or any time you drop below half-time, with a minimum monthly payment of $40.00.

Sophomore students may borrow up to $3,200 per year
Junior and Senior students may borrow up to $5,200 per year

This loan type involves private lenders and is designed to supplement your overall educational financing strategy. Your alternative loan applications should be provided to the Financial Aid Office, so that Mount Saint Mary’s University can adjust your overall financial awards, if any, based on loan amounts. Terms vary from private lenders, so you and your parents should compare them carefully, including reviewing any fees added to the loan amounts. Students who borrow may be required to have a co-signer. Repayment typically begins six months after graduation, withdrawal or any time you drop below half-time.

Keck Loans are interest free until six months after students are no longer enrolled. You must be enrolled full-time, which is twelve units, and in the Traditional Undergraduate program. Loan amounts can be up to $2,500 per year. The interest rate is fixed at 7%. Keck loans require a master promissory note as well as entrance and exit counseling. Repayment begins six months after graduation, withdrawal or any time you drop below full time with a minimum monthly payment of $100.00.
