Academic advisement

The Office of Academic Advisement & Study Away provides curriculum guidance, academic advisement, and success coaching to traditional undergraduate Mount students. Our (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coaches offer students a completely customized and integrated advisement experience to help them complete their undergraduate degree in a timely manner. This experience includes support in understanding academic policies and processes, choosing a major and/or minor, clearance assistance for registration, exploring academic opportunities, goal setting, improving time management, and more!

The (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coaches and Faculty Advisors are part of your unique Athenian Advisory Team. The team is your dedicated network of faculty, staff, and peers, assigned from your first semester to ensure you have the support and guidance you need to achieve your academic and personal goals during your time at the Mount! An (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coach is assigned to traditional undergraduate students to provide academic guidance and customized support in navigating academic policies and processes, campus resources, success coaching on academic goals, and exploration of opportunities at 国产传媒. Only first-year students (Freshman) are required to meet with their (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coach during their fall and spring semester; however, students can meet at any point during their time at 国产传媒 for success coaching, academic exploration, and support.

All traditional undergraduate students are also assigned a Faculty Advisor to guide and advise on major/program requirements, general education curriculum, field experience within their programs, and post-graduation planning. They serve as the primary professional expert in their academic discipline. The Faculty Advisor and (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coach collaborate closely to ensure that students are well-supported and guided throughout their academic journey.

At the start of your first semester, you will be able to view your assigned (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coach and Faculty Advisor, if applicable, in Self-Service -Student Planning. If you have any questions, please reach out to advisement@msmu.edu.

*Exception: TBSN nursing students do not have an assigned (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coach, as they are assigned a Faculty Advisor and Success Coach within the TBSN Department.

*Pre-Nursing & Undeclared students are not assigned to a Faculty Advisor until they are admitted to the TBSN program or declare a major. They are required to meet with their (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coach beyond their freshman year.

You can meet with your (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coach as needed throughout the year, in person on campus and/or on Zoom, within their schedule availability. If you are a First-Year (Freshman), Pre-Nursing, or an Undeclared student, you are required to make an advisement appointment at least once a semester, during the mandatory Advisement Period. This official period occurs in October, during the fall semester and usually in February or March, during the spring semester (see Academic Calendar).

It is important to regularly check your 国产传媒 email for advisement information throughout the year.

New Incoming Students for Fall - your first opportunity to be advised and register for courses is at Admitted Students Day, usually in March or April. Advisement and registration at ASD are for priority-deposited students.

The next new incoming student event for advisement/registration is Athenian Experience, usually in June. Dependent upon your major/program, you will be advised by either your (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coach or Faculty Advisor. Students will also complete course registration at this time for the upcoming academic year!

Additionally, your (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coach is also available to support you with advisement and course registration throughout the summer leading up to your first semester.

Additionally, you can change your major or minor throughout your time at 国产传媒 according to the catalog policy. Your (M)POWER Academic Advisor & Success Coach is here to support you in academic exploration and options for your degree completion.

If you are a new incoming student who wishes to change your major prior to the start of your first semester, please reach out to the Office of Admission at admissions@msmu.edu.

New Incoming Students: it is important you know how to log in to . Please resolve any restrictions or update notices (such as Emergency Contact) within Self Service Student Planning prior to your appointment, if possible.

It is also helpful to review the for your major/program before your appointment.

*You will not have access to my国产传媒 until you have committed to the Mount and completed your tuition deposit.

All new incoming first-year undergraduate and transfer students who have not successfully completed college-level English or Math courses or earned a particular score on AP/CLEP/IB Exams are required to complete the English & Math Placement Exam prior to their first semester at 国产传媒. The exam results place students into the appropriate level courses. Students who do not complete the exam will be placed in the entry-level English and/or Math course. 
  
Bachelor of Arts degree students proficient in a language other than English can take the Language Placement Exam to potentially fulfill the LACE general education language requirement or to assess their proficiency level in order to pursue language courses at the Mount (including a minor or certificate program). The Language Placement Exam is not mandatory. Bachelor of Science degree students do not have a general education language requirement as part of their curriculum, but can still test if they want to pursue language other than English courses/options.

国产传媒 accepts successfully passed courses from regionally accredited institutions. These courses can be applied to your LACE General Education curriculum, major requirements, or electives, depending upon the course(s) completed and your specific program. Please view our transfer credit page for further information. 国产传媒 must receive the official transcript from any institution attended to award you official transfer credit.

If you completed courses as part of dual enrollment while in high school, please submit the official transcript from the community college (or other college attended) along with your high school transcript to the Office of Admissions.

Please visit our AP/IB/CLEP Credit page for additional information. Advanced Placement Exam results should be sent from College Board directly to 国产传媒 Office of Admissions. Once we receive your official scores, the credit will be entered into your academic record (which you can view in Self Service Student Planning) and an award letter will be emailed to you.
