Amelia Mathis has dedicated her career to empowering women to prioritize their physical, spiritual and emotional well-being. With extensive experience as a sports and wellness educator, coach and former athlete, she brings her unique expertise to Mount Saint Mary’s as the new director of Sports, Recreation and Wellness.

Amelia, who joined the Mount in October 2024, will oversee much of the programming offered at the new Michael A. Enright Wellness Pavilion. She is focused on ensuring that the state-of-the-art facility is an inclusive hub for wellness, student health education, engagement and student success for the entire community.

She also looks forward to supporting and working with the academic programs that will be housed in the new facility, such as the Doctor of Physical Therapy program and the new bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science.

“I am honored to be the first director in this innovative space,” Amelia shares. “The Pavilion was designed with students’ needs in mind, providing a place for growth, connection and self-discovery self-discovery. I want the Pavilion to become an integral part of their daily lives.”

To bolster student engagement in sports and wellness, Amelia has introduced innovative programming while enhancing existing offerings. Collaborating with different departments, such as the Office of Women’s Leadership and Student Engagement, Campus Ministry and Spirituality, and various student-led clubs, she aims to create opportunities that appeal to the diverse backgrounds and interests of Mount students.

“The Mount is such a supportive community,” Amelia says. “By collaborating and offering a variety of options, such as a wellness-focused speaker series, an engaging incentive-based fitness challenge or team sports, we can appeal to Mount students from various backgrounds and abilities. They can explore what wellness means for them and set a foundation they can take with them when they graduate.”

Amelia emphasizes the importance of integrating wellness into student life as a tool for increasing academic success as well as overall resiliency. “Developing a foundation of healthy habits is proven to increase students’ academic achievement while providing an outlet to handle stress, challenges and the demands of balancing life and career,” she says.

Before joining Mount Saint Mary’s, Amelia served as director of athletics and wellness at the Buckley School in Sherman Oaks and assistant athletic director at the Archer School for Girls. She also worked as an educator at the Geffen Academy at UCLA, where she tailored lessons to students of varying abilities. In addition, Amelia continues her coaching work as a strength and conditioning coach at the City Volleyball Club. A former Division I soccer player, Amelia earned her bachelor's degree in African American Studies with a concentration in sociology from UCLA and her master's degree in secondary education with a focus on physical education from Loyola Marymount University.
