The newest members of the Mount Saint Mary’s community got their first look at life as Athenians during Athenian Experience 2025, held June 16 at the Doheny Campus. Designed to help incoming students prepare for their academic and campus journey, the daylong event offered a balance of information, inspiration and community connection.

Organized by the Office of Women’s Leadership and Community Engagement, the program brought together almost 300 new students for a dynamic schedule that included campus tours, student panels, academic advising and a lively festival to close out the day.

For many attendees, the day was about more than just gathering information — it was about picturing themselves as part of the Mount’s vibrant community. “I am getting to meet my future classmates and to learn more about this beautiful campus,” shared Gabriella Cruz, a pre-nursing major from Orange County. “I chose the Mount because of its personalized attention, and because I really like how they work closely with specific programs.” Gabriella is especially looking forward to one milestone in particular: “I’m really looking forward to living on campus — I’ve already started planning how I’ll decorate my room.”

The morning kicked off with orientation group meetings and an engaging student panel where incoming students learned about clubs, organizations and ways to get involved on campus. Clara Cipriano, a business administration major, left the session inspired and ready to take action. “I want to get involved with student clubs and organizations that suit my interests,” she said.

Throughout the day, Orientation Leaders played a crucial role, offering not only logistical guidance but also heartfelt support based on their own experiences. “When I was an incoming student, I was really anxious. I had a lot of questions,” shared Yaretzi Villareal, one of the Orientation Leaders. “I wanted to be that resource for incoming students. We know a lot, and we can help new Athenians feel a little more confident about starting their journey at the Mount.”

The Athenian Resource and Department Fair transformed the South Lawn into a bustling hub of information, with academic departments and student services offering guidance on everything from career preparation to wellness resources.

Incoming student Melody Quintanilla noted that this opportunity to connect with staff and students helped ease the nerves of starting college. “This event gives a feeling of what the next four years at the Mount will look like,” she said. “It helps us slowly get used to college life.”

Chris Barnes, director of Student Involvement and Inclusion, encouraged students to embrace everything the Mount has to offer. “My advice to new students is to get involved early. The more you invest in your experience here, the more rewarding it will be,” he said.

After a full afternoon of academic advising and registration, students gathered once more for the Athenian Festival, where music, food and games brought energy and fun to the South Lawn.

Incoming students will return for New Student Orientation at the Chalon Campus on August 22, where they will continue preparing for their transition to the Mount. There will also be a Parent and Family Orientation on August 23 at the Doheny Campus, offering families the opportunity to learn more about campus resources and how to support students throughout their academic journey. Thanks to the connections they have made and the resources they discovered through Athenian Experience, the Class of 2029 is poised to begin their journey with confidence and a strong sense of belonging.
