Fred Ramirez, PhD, has been in his new role as dean of the Department of Education at Mount Saint Mary’s for almost a year. Since he started, he has been working to build on the University’s reputation for graduating educational leaders. By refining current offerings and creating new programming, Fred is working to ensure graduates will be well-equipped for successful careers.

Among the new programs being introduced by the education department is the Teacher Residency program, which will begin this summer at New Heights Charter School in Los Angeles.

To stay informed about the needs and demands of diverse student bodies, Fred has been proactively consulting with school superintendents across the state who have informed the new offerings and shifts in curriculum. Fred also strives to make a Mount education as accessible as possible, helping create online options for various teacher credentials and graduate programs.

A firm believer that it takes a village to achieve success, Fred has been working closely with Mount Saint Mary’s faculty and staff across campus, focusing on ways he can help support their immediate and long-term goals. He places a strong emphasis on paying it forward through mentoring and serving. “I always want to leave a seat at the table for the person I am mentoring,” he says.

Fred was drawn to Mount Saint Mary’s because of its strong commitment to social justice — a priority he shares.

Fred has a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Indiana University Bloomington, a master’s degree in secondary education from Loyola Marymount University, a bachelor’s degree in social studies from San Diego State University, and he has decades of experience as an educator. In addition to his position as dean, he is the president and founder of EdActs Global, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting young adults learn leadership skills by creating and conducting service activities. His love of education also extends beyond the classroom and into the water, where he spends time as a scuba diver instructor.
