On September 10, 2024, the Mount Saint Mary’s University community gathered at the Doheny Campus for the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit, a long-standing Mount tradition rooted in the Catholic faith that dates back over 1,000 years, and celebrates the beginning of the academic year.

During the Mass, President Ann McElaney-Johnson, PhD, encouraged students to embrace their academic journey, to care for and support each other, and to make the most of the opportunities provided at the Mount. “You are on a path to something greater; you are on a path to make a true difference in this world. This Mount community, everyone here with you today, is here to accompany you on this incredible journey,” said President McElaney-Johnson.

The Mass, organized by the Office of Campus Ministry and Spirituality, incorporated symbols representing the global and cultural diversity of the Mount community. A lace cloth from Le Puy, France — the birthplace of the Sisters of St. Joseph — was laid on the altar, symbolizing the University’s foundation. Throughout the ceremony, additional cloths from various countries and cultures were added, honoring the many backgrounds that enrich the Mount’s vibrant student body. In addition, members of the Na Pua O Ka ‘Aina Hawaiian student club performed one of their dances.

After the service, students, faculty, and staff gathered at the Doheny Campus’ cafeteria for a community lunch, sharing food and conversation before returning to their academic routines.
