This past weekend, more that 120 Mount alumnae, faculty, staff, students and friends participated in the 17th President’s Invitation to Serve. Coordinated by the Office of Women’s Leadership and Student Engagement, this tradition brings the Mount community together for a day of service in the greater Los Angeles area.

The Doheny campus served as home base, with free transportation provided to all volunteer sites and to/from the Chalon campus. After breakfast and a welcome from President Ann McElaney-Johnson, participants were assigned to volunteer sites and projects in partnership with six non-profit organizations:  Alexandria House, Assistance League of Los Angeles, Downtown Women's Center, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Joseph Center and Westside Food Bank.

“The President's Invitation to Serve is a beloved tradition when we reflect on our CSJs' call to ‘serve all persons without distinction.’ It is a day when we come together to care for ‘the dear neighbor,’ as our Sisters have been doing for 374 years,” said President McElaney-Johnson. “I am thrilled to see such an incredible turnout for this year's day of service.”

From baking cookies at the Alexandria House to preparing meal kits at the Downtown Women's Center and helping organize donation items at St. Vincent de Paul Los Angeles and St. Joseph Center, volunteers had the opportunity to support the important work of these organizations in different ways throughout the day.

“Participating in this experience has shown me the incredible sense of community and service to others that makes the Mount so special,” said Shirley Espinoza ’25, a social work major who volunteered at the Downtown Women’s Center. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to give back to my community through an event organized by my University.”
