The four Marymount Scholars will begin their studies at Mount Saint Mary's University this fall semester.

The Marymount Education Foundation has selected Mount Saint Mary’s University as its first university partner for the foundation’s recently launched Marymount Scholars Program. This program will provide financial support and professional mentorship to newly admitted students from underresourced communities.

The program’s goal is to support higher academic success and graduation rates for high school students with a B average. Research indicates that this student population is more vulnerable to not completing a bachelor’s degree due to a combination of factors, including financial constraints and insufficient merit awards. Currently, 76% of high school students with an A average earn a bachelor’s degree or higher within 10 years. That number drops to 50% for students with a B average.

Four incoming Mount Saint Mary’s students have been awarded scholarships that will cover up to $25,000 of their educational costs per year.  In addition, the program will provide mentorship to support scholars to persist with their studies through graduation.

The Marymount Education Foundation was formed in September 2022 after Marymount California University shuttered its doors earlier that year because of declining enrollment and budgetary problems. “When Marymount California University closed, we knew we wanted to continue the legacy of transforming lives through education,” said Richard Edler, president and chairman of the board of trustees of Marymount Education Foundation. “We are supporting high-potential students who will go on to help others, regardless of their GPA, by funding their college education and offering mentorship all the way to graduation and beyond.”

During Marymount’s closing, Mount Saint Mary’s partnered with MCU to offer its students easy and affordable transfer opportunities to continue their education at the Mount.

“We selected Mount Saint Mary’s University as our first scholarship partner because of mission alignment as well as the great collaboration we experienced when sending MCU students to 国产传媒 after the closure announcement,” said Robyn Jones, executive director of the Marymount Education Foundation. “The four Marymount Scholars that we selected are caring and ambitious young women who will go on to make positive impacts in their communities.”

The Foundation worked directly with the undergraduate admissions office to develop a list of potential scholarship candidates and collaborate on the scholarship application process. “We are grateful for this unique partnership that will support the academic success of newly admitted students who, otherwise, would likely not be able to pursue their educational goals because of financial reasons,” said Susan Dileno, MBA, vice president for enrollment management at Mount Saint Mary’s.

The four scholars – two first year and two transfer students – will begin their studies this fall. “Receiving this scholarship has allowed me to attend the university of my dreams debt and worry free. I can now go on to be the first in my family to obtain my bachelor's degree,” said Audrey V., one of the Marymount Scholars who is transferring from LA Harbor College. She’s excited about joining the pre-law minor program at Mount Saint Mary’s and participating in some of the opportunities that the program offers, including the highly competitive mock trial and moot court competitions. After graduation, she plans on becoming a lawyer to represent underresourced communities.
