A Mount Saint Mary’s class changed the course of Melissa Stolsig’s life. Stolsig ’02, MA, MS, PsyD, came to the Mount as an English major but was inspired by a child development course to explore a potential new direction. A few additional psychology courses later, and with support from professors including Corrine Mabry, she could visualize her career and decided to double major.
“I had never been exposed to psychology until I took that child development course, but I realized I was good at it, and it opened other paths for me,” Stolsig says. “After studying at other higher education institutions, I realized that my experience at the Mount was unique.”
Now a clinical psychologist in private practice, Stolsig notes that the culture of the Mount still influences her work today. “I first learned a lot of my practicing principles at Mount Saint Mary’s. It has always had an openness for diversity and cultural inclusion.”
It wasn’t feasible for Stolsig to give back to the Mount right after graduation, but she donated when she could and is now a member of the Brady Leadership Society. She says, “I’ve never had the same interaction with professors at other universities as I’ve had at Mount Saint Mary’s. It will always have a special place in my heart.”
Stolsig is pleased that donations from the Brady Leadership Society support the Mount Fund and help with the University’s most pressing needs. “Every time I give, I think there’s another young woman for whom the Mount is exactly the right place. It gives me joy to help ensure the Mount’s many opportunities for current students.”
