Alex P. Stogryn became a champion of Mount Saint Mary鈥檚 when his twin brother, Daniel, joined the physical sciences and mathematics department in 1977. Daniel鈥檚 specialization was in chemistry, but he also started the Mount鈥檚 computer science program. Alex was also passionate about STEM, having received his bachelor鈥檚 in physics from the University of Pennsylvania and his master鈥檚 and PhD in physics from Stanford University. He worked at Aerojet for more than 30 years on electromagnetic theory and satellite technology.
A Heritage Society Member, Alex left a bequest in 2022 of $1.7 million to the Mount. His gift will be directed to two main funding priorities: the Wellness Pavilion and the establishment of the Alex P. Stogryn Memorial Expendable Scholarship for students majoring in one of the STEM fields.
Alex鈥檚 bequest is not the first time he generously contributed to the Mount. After Daniel passed away in 1998, Alex created the Daniel Stogryn Award for Excellence in Research. Alex, his sister Dorothy, and her husband Rudy then endowed the Stogryn and Zaveruka Families Scholarship in Mathematics and the Physical Sciences for outstanding juniors or seniors. These scholarships have produced 27 and 16 awards, respectively.
