Biography

Dr. Tochluk joined the Mount St. Mary’s team in Fall, 2005 after teaching elementary and middle school in Inglewood, California. While there, she specialized in differentiating instruction for English language learners. Dr. Tochluk also has extensive experience in cross-race dialogue and youth mentoring.

The Third Edition of her first book, Witnessing Whiteness: The Journey into Racial Awareness and Antiracist Action, is a comprehensive introduction to issues of race, whiteness, and white racial identity. It has been used as part of community and professional development initiatives in schools, faith groups, and community groups since 2010. A 14-part workshop/dialogue series is available for groups wanting to investigate their personal and community's relationship to the issues raised in the book. Dr. Tochluk is also a member of AWARE-LA, a group of white individuals working to end racism. This grassroots, all-volunteer organization has been active for 20 years in the Los Angeles area. Dr. Tochluk co-facilitates their 4-day Unmasking Whiteness Summer Institute along with her AWARE-LA colleagues. The program leads participants through an exploration of identity and privilege issues. Special consideration is given to how white individuals can create an effective racial justice advocacy practice.

Dr. Tochluk received her BA in psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, MA in Counseling Psychology from Loyola Marymount University, and PhD in Depth Psychology from Pacifi a Graduate Institute. She also holds a California Clear Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential.
