Biography

I was hired as a full-time faculty member in the Department of Sociology at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Fall 2016, when I also become director of the GIS programs, which included the geospatial criminology major and GIS minor, two programs still in their infancy at the time. After developing the new GIS Certificate, I am now responsible for three GIS-related academic programs.

Prior to arriving at 国产传媒, I spent eight years teaching GIS courses as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Geography at Cal State University, Northridge (CSUN), where I had obtained my bachelors and master’s degrees in GIS. There was a brief two-year pause while completing my PhD coursework at UCLA where I was charged with teaching many of the GIS summer courses in the Department of Geography. Between this hiatus and arriving at 国产传媒, I returned to my adjunct faculty position at CSUN where I continued teaching GIS courses. At the same time, I started teaching GIS classes at Santa Monica College and Pasadena City College.

My experience in GIS extends beyond the classroom environment. Before beginning my teaching career, I spent 10 years as a beach and lake lifeguard. In addition to my regular lifeguard duties, I developed maps to assist in improved emergency response procedures. Maps included Los Angeles County beaches, surface maps of Hansen Dam Recreation Center, and a depth map of Hansen Lake, which was accomplished with the use of SONAR. Additionally, I spent two years working as a GIS Analyst for the California Coastal Commission where I was primarily tasked with mapping the state’s wetlands. Most recently, I began consulting as an expert witness in capital homicide cases across the nation, after attorneys started to seek out my expertise in crime mapping.

On a more personal note, I am an avid outdoorsman and love backpacking, rock climbing, hiking, camping, mountaineering, and caving. I also enjoy surfing, snowboarding, and love to get away and travel somewhere new as frequently as possible. I am also a huge sports fan and former college baseball player. I have been a life-long fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Lakers, USC Trojans (NCAA football), and UCLA Bruins (NCAA basketball & baseball).
