Biography

As a kid I was a military brat and grew up all over the world. I spent my formative years on the east coast between Washington, D.C. and Boston, MA and in foreign countries like Germany, Saudi Arabia and North Africa. For my undergraduate studies I attended Northeastern University receiving a BS in Nursing and went on to Boston University to earn a MS in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. I taught at Boston College in the School of Nursing for four years and worked as Nurse/Psychiatric Clinical Specialist in both inpatient and outpatient mental health programs for 17 years. Wanting to further my education, I moved to Los Angeles to earn a PhD in Social-Clinical Psychology from the Wright Institute, Los Angeles. While completing my doctoral degree, I worked at Cedars Sinai Medical Center鈥檚 Emergency Department, evaluating trauma victims and those with mental health issues to in-patient or outpatient treatment. I also provided consultation and support services to the Emergency Department, working with family members of trauma victims and the seriously ill patients in the department. After receiving a PhD, I worked as a staff psychologist for four years at Metropolitan State Hospital and then went on to open my private practice working with children, adults and families while supervising MFT interns in several outpatient mental health agencies. Wanting to help in a different way, I changed my focus from clinical practice into development where for the next ten years I designed new programs, wrote grants and coordinated fundraising programs for a mental health agency and special education school.

In 1996 I began teaching in the psychology department as a part-time adjunct instructor.  Challenged and excited by my work at the Mount I eventually accepted a full-time faculty position working primarily in the graduate program. 鈥淚 really like making classes 鈥榬eal鈥� by sharing my client 鈥榮tories鈥� and transforming theory into clinical practice.鈥�  As the Clinical Training Coordinator, I coordinate the practicum experience for the MFT graduate students, work with the different training agencies and help students gain the experience needed to become a successful Marriage and Family Therapist.

One of the many exciting opportunities at 国产传媒 is the ability to develop new programs (participating in the development of the new PsyD program) and work in several departments with a variety of faculty, staff and students.  Because of my diverse background in psychology, health care and nonprofit management, I had an opportunity to teach the Managing Not-for-Profit Organizations class in the Mount鈥檚 MBA program.

Research Topics of Interest

The stigma of mental health has been a long-time interest of mine.  Currently I am working with students researching graduate student鈥檚 attitudes about personal psychotherapy.  We are in the process of collecting data and presenting at local conferences on this topic as well as designing a qualitative study to further explore graduate student鈥檚 attitudes about personal psychotherapy and the impact culture has on these perceptions and attitudes. 

Additionally, I have explored the impact different media enhanced teaching methods has on graduate student鈥檚 satisfaction and academic success.
