BS in Exercise Science

For the Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science degree, the Mount students can choose from two degree tracks: 

  • Women's Health Promotion - Pre-Physical Therapy, Human Performance, and Women's Physiology
  • Wellness Emphasis - Health, Nutrition, and Fitness Management

For students interested in advanced study, this track prepares them for careers in physical therapy, athletic training, public health, and other allied health fields where understanding the role of exercise in women's longevity is crucial. In this track, you will understand the physiological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that influence women’s health, as well as how gender affects women’s athletic performance and health outcomes. 

Students interested in applied health and fitness, community wellness, and entrepreneurial ventures in the growing industry of health and performance should select this track. Graduates will understand the role of hormones in exercise performance, recovery, and adaptations, as well as how exercise, nutrition, and physical activity impact women differently. Coursework emphasizes exercise prediction, sports science, nutrition, and program design with opportunities to explore business and leadership skills.

Women and Gender in Exercise Science

This course explores the role of gender, with a specific focus on women in exercise science, including physical activity, fitness, and health. Students will understand the history and evolution of gender norms in sport and physical activity, the role of women in sports science research, and how gender affects athletic performance and health outcomes. Through case studies, research analysis, and discussion, students will critically engage with contemporary issues in women's health and fitness.

Exercise Physiology with Focus in Women's Longevity

This course explores the physiological effects of exercise on women's health, with a particular focus on promoting longevity and enhancing quality of life. Students will delve into the biological mechanisms that underlie exercise and how these processes change throughout a women's life stages. It will address cardiovascular health, muscle and bone health, hormonal fluctuations, and the prevention of age-related diseases.

Hormonal Influences on Exercise and Performance

This course explores the significant role of hormones in exercise performance, recovery, and adaptation. Students will study various hormones, like insulin, cortisol, estrogen, testosterone, and growth hormone and their impact on the body's response to physical activity. It will cover the physiological mechanisms by which these hormones regulate energy metabolism, muscle growth, fat storage, stress response, and endurance.
