The Healthcare Policy program at the Mount offers a flexible path for students interested in making a difference in the field of healthcare. With options to pursue a major, incorporate a global healthcare policy concentration or select a minor, students can tailor their studies to focus on the areas and issues that matter most to them.

BA in Healthcare Policy

The Bachelor of Arts in Healthcare Policy degree combines the science and politics of healthcare, empowering students to understand and influence the policies shaping our healthcare system. Students can focus on local, national or international healthcare issues, gaining a comprehensive view of healthcare's most pressing challenges. In addition to rigorous coursework, the program includes either a hands-on internship or an international travel study, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world healthcare settings.

For those interested in nursing, Healthcare Policy majors must meet GPA requirements and complete the following electives to be eligible to apply to the Accelerated BS in nursing program (ABSN):

  • BIO 3 General Microbiology (with Lab) (3 units)
  • BIO 50A Human Anatomy (with Lab) (3 units)
  • BIO 50B Human Physiology (with Lab) (3 units)
  • CHE 3 Foundations of Chemistry or PHY 1A Introductory Physics (3 units)

Global Healthcare Policy minor

The Global Healthcare Policy minor is an option for healthcare policy majors. This minor offers students a unique lens on healthcare, focusing on the political and socioeconomic factors that shape health outcomes and access across different societies. Through this option, students examine healthcare systems around the world, exploring how diverse cultures, governments and economic contexts impact health. Students will gain research skills in data collection and evaluation, supported by a framework rooted in social justice and global awareness. Through comparative studies, you will develop a nuanced understanding of healthcare solutions across regions and institutions, gaining valuable perspectives for international healthcare careers or further academic pursuits.

Minor in Healthcare Policy

The healthcare policy minor is an excellent choice for students from any major who wish to deepen their understanding of healthcare policy and its societal impacts. This minor includes foundational courses in political science, biology and nursing, as well as four advanced courses tailored to each student’s academic goals. Guided by their advisors, students with this minor develop a well-rounded perspective on healthcare that enhances their primary field of study and prepares them to engage thoughtfully in healthcare-related careers or further studies.

Solving Problems in Healthcare (Introduction to Healthcare Policy)

Explore how healthcare problems emerge and are tackled both locally and globally. By examining issues such as women鈥檚 health, immigrant health and healthcare for unhoused populations, you鈥檒l gain insight into the social determinants of health and the varied perspectives that shape healthcare policy solutions.

HCP 112
Healthcare Law and Policy

Dive into the legal landscape of healthcare, exploring federal and state regulations and the political forces driving healthcare reform. This course will give you the foundational knowledge needed for roles in healthcare advocacy, policymaking and beyond.

HCP 157
Epidemics and Inequalities

Analyze the impact of health disparities through the lens of major epidemics such as AIDS and Zika. In this course, you鈥檒l examine how social inequalities affect disease outcomes and conduct original research to explore solutions for reducing health inequities.

Undergraduate pathway to an MS in Healthcare Administration

Earn both a BA in Healthcare Policy (HCP) and an MS in Healthcare Administration (HCA) in as little as five years (plus summers)! This accelerated program is designed for students who are ready to make an impact in healthcare leadership and want to streamline their path from an HCP to an HCA.

At the end of this bridge program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of healthcare institutions, construct and evaluate arguments concerning healthcare policy issues.
  2. Have the ability to explore and examine leadership qualities and characteristics in the global and diverse healthcare industry.
  3. Utilize the major methodological tools in healthcare policy to effectively describe, explain and predict healthcare trends and policy outcomes.

Requirements:

  • A 3.3 in the healthcare policy major, plus application and approval of the healthcare policy advisor and the HCA director.

Prerequisites:

  • HCP 10: Intro to HCP (HCP 10 may be waived for transfer undergraduate students)
  • HCP 112: Healthcare Policy
  • POL 101: Research Methods

In their senior year, students will take four courses/12 units in our M.S. in Healthcare Administration program. These courses cover 12 of the 14 units required during the HCA first year. They will be double counted for 12 units of upper division work in the healthcare policy major in the undergraduate program.

Undergraduate Research Training Honors Program

The Global Women in STEM and Policy Undergraduate Research Training Honors Program trains cohorts of undergraduate women to conduct basic and applied research in both the sciences and social sciences, with a focus on global and interdisciplinary approaches. This program reflects the Mount’s mission and strategic plan to empower women, engage in a global environment and increase undergraduate research opportunities.
