Inspire and lead the future of education at Mount Saint Mary's University

At Mount Saint Mary’s University, Los Angeles, studying education means gaining hands-on experience in real classrooms while engaging with innovative teaching methods.

Our programs emphasize reflective practice, encouraging you to continually develop your skills and strategies. We are dedicated to shaping the next generation of educational leaders committed to making a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

By graduation, you'll have developed a thoughtful, comprehensive understanding of your role as a leader in education. Many of our graduates go on to become classroom teachers in public, charter or private schools.

The Department of Education offers two main paths: majors and teacher credentialing programs

  • If you aim to teach elementary school, you’ll follow our BA in Liberal Studies paired with the California Elementary Teacher Preparation Program, multiple subjects credential.
  • If middle or high school is your calling, you’ll major in the subject you plan to teach (Art, Biology, Chemistry, English, Math, Music, History, Physical Education, or Spanish) while completing the California Secondary Teacher Preparation Program, single subject credential.
  • For those interested in preschool education, our AA in Early Childhood Education (ages 0-8) and BA in Child Development (ages 0-18 and families) provide the skills you’ll need.
  • If you envision working with children outside the classroom, the BA in Child Development is your path to a fulfilling career in counseling, social work or other supportive roles.

Teaching Social Sciences concentration

New concentration for Education and History Majors

The History and Political Science Department, in collaboration with the Education Department, offers a Teaching Social Science concentration within the History major. This concentration is approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) and prepares students to teach Social Science at the secondary level. Through this concentration, students complete the coursework necessary to demonstrate subject matter competence in Social Science. This option allows students to meet the state’s subject matter requirement without taking a state-administered exam.

Prepare to make an impact

Shape your future

Through the Education program at Mount Saint Mary's, you'll engage in reflective practices that explore areas of pedagogy, assessment, technology, leadership and issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion.

You'll become adept in how to support students from all backgrounds and see through curriculum that often doesn't represent students of diverse backgrounds.

Coupled with the ability to articulate the why behind your pedagogical approach and how those strategies support all students, you'll be ready to teach in a variety of educational settings effectively and compassionately.

Our students achieve a powerful voice and critical awareness that is not developed everywhere.
