Degree Requirements

1. 15 units of Creative Writing Workshops
2. 3 units of Poetics in the first year
3. 9 units of Literature and Thought:
   • Courses with the prefix CRW in:
     • The Creative Habit
     • Latinx Border/Mixed Genre
     • Afro-Latinx/Mixed Genre
     • Special Topics
     • Auteur Theory
4. 3 units of Electives (from HUM or FLM)
5. Thesis (6 units required)
   • Thesis CRW 296 (3) to be taken twice, in each of the last two semesters

Required for completion of the degree is submission of a 150 to 250 page manuscript in one fiction or nonfiction; a 120 page play or screenplay; or 50 pages of poetry - closely reviewed, edited and refined with the assistance of the student's Thesis Committee. The Creative Writing thesis can be written in English and/or Spanish.  For more information on the Thesis proposal and approval process, contact the MFA in Creative Writing Program office. Thesis continuation is a 1 unit course, taken with advisor’s approval as needed.
