Internal/External Assessment Results: Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science of Business Program

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science (BA/BS) Business program assessed 8 out of the 11 outcomes from goals 1, 2, 3 and 4 for fiscal years 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. Please note that since some of the goals/outcomes have not been assessed before, it will take three more years to completely integrate the new goals/outcomes into the four-year cycle. These goals and outcomes are as follows:

2016-17 Fiscal Year

Leaning Goal 2: Communicates effectively/Learning Outcome 2.1: Speaks clearly and intelligently

Results: The Business Administration Department determined that students need to improve their ability to speak clearly and intelligently by reducing filler words (e.g. 鈥渦h鈥, 鈥渦m鈥 & 鈥渓ike鈥) because they received a scored below the Outcome 1 expectation score of 25.5 or higher. The Business Administration Department will focus on adding basic professional speaking skills early in the academic experience in order to utilize upper division classes for honing such skills, not learning them.

Learning Goal 3: Assumes a leadership role/Learning Outcome 3.1: Adheres to high ethical standards

Results: The Business Administration Department has determined that students need to improve their understanding on how to adhere to high ethical standards because they score below the Outcome 1 score of 16.8 or higher. Based on the results and faculty discussion and recommendations, the Department decided there needs to be more consistency in presenting ethical dilemma across different courses and faculty advisors in the department should make sure to advise taking the business ethics and critical thinking courses before the student鈥檚 junior year.

2017-18 Fiscal Year

Learning Goal 1: Exemplifies the highest standard of business professionalism/Learning Outcome 1.2: Displays respect for all.

Results: The Business Administration Department goal determined that the students exceeded all expectations for Outcome 1. Although the students exceeded all expectations, the Business Administration Department will uses faculty鈥檚 recommended improvements such as  smaller teams, prequalifying to team members, the use of team contracts and making sure that faculty include a standardized process for team development & assessment in their courses.

Learning Goal 2: Communicates effectively/Learning Outcome 2.2: Writes clearly and intelligently

Results: The Business Administration Department has determined that students did not exceed any of the expectations scores for Outcome 2 because the assessor did not provide students with  a writing template and a rubric.  Based on the results the Department Administration Department decided that students will be provided a writing template and a rubric in their courses.

Learning Goal 4: Conducts creative analyses/Learning Outcome 4.1: Assimilates data, applies critical thinking during analysis and summarizes results clearly and concisely

Results: The Business Administration Department has determined that the students exceeded all of the expectations for Outcome 1. Although the Outcome 1 expectations were exceeded the Business Administration Department will improve the training by providing guidelines and standardized rubrics to students and assessor.

2018-19 Fiscal Year

Learning Goal 1: Exemplifies the highest standard of business professionalism/Learning Outcome 1.3: Works effectively in teams

Results: The Business Administration Department determined that students exceeded the Outcome 3 expectation score of 83%. Although the Outcome 1 expectations were exceeded the Business Administration Department will provide faculty with the faculty recommended option of using  assignment that has an additional grading section for 鈥淭eamwork鈥, (b) rubrics & benchmarks 鈥渢ailored鈥 for this assessment and (c) Information to minimize any misunderstandings regarding use of rubrics. 

Learning Goal 3: Assumes a leadership role/Learning Outcome 3.3: Functions skillfully at a strategic level

Results: The Business Administration Department determined that the student teams exceed the Outcome 3 expectation score of 80% but did not increase the teams draft to final paper score by ten percent. Based on the results and faculty discussion and recommendations students will be provided assistance on the best approaches to incorporate feedback. 

Learning Goal 3: Assumes a leadership role/Learning Outcome 3.4: Reflects on past successes/failures to improve future results

Results: The Business Administration Department determined that the student teams exceed the Outcome 3 expectation score of 80% but did not increase the teams draft to final paper score by ten percent. Based on the results and faculty discussion and recommendations students will be provided assistance on the best approaches to incorporate feedback and faculty will be provided a rubric and guidelines on best to compare the Value proposition of the first draft 2-3 weeks left in the semester with the Value Proposition of the final report at the end of the semester.

2019-20 Fiscal Year

Learning Goal 2: Communicates Effectively/Learning Outcome 2.3: Uses technology appropriately when communicating 

Results: The students have met or exceeded the goal each time this goal has been assessed which has shown that students have presented the information clearly and completely. The only improvement is in the area of engagement where information no presented in a 鈥渃ompelling鈥 way. As a result, the Department plans to change the rubric to better assess the audience engagement so that the students have clearer guidelines on what is needed in this area.

Learning WEC Goal 2: Communicates Effectively/Learning Outcome 2.3 Uses technology appropriately when communicating

Results: Students score 8.3 which is slightly be below the average of 8.5. This is a new goal for the Online program which is focused on addressing the challenges students face in using integrated approaches in the communication of solutions proposed for each case studyAs a result, the Department plans to evaluate curriculum and teaching methods to improve student performance.

2021-21 Fiscal Year

Learning Goal 2: Communicates Effectively/Learning Outcome 2.1: Speaks clearly and intelligently  

Results: The students have exceeded the goal each time this goal has been assessed, which has shown that students have presented the information clearly and intelligently. The Department plans to make improvements to the rubric. 

Learning Goal 3: Communicates Effectively/Learning Outcome 3.1: Adheres to high ethical standards  

Results: The students have met the criteria of 鈥渒nowledge of business鈥 but fell slightly below the criteria of 鈥淐hoosing the most ethical response and Reasoning.鈥 This is the first time this Goal/Outcome has been assessed. As a result, Department plans to review the data and assessment tool to determine if there were questions that may have been misunderstood. 

Learning Goal 3: Communicates Effectively/Learning Outcome 3.4: Motivates & inspires subordinates and peers 

Results: The students did not meet the goal by 2 tenths of a point. A review of the criteria showed that students exceeded some portions of the assessment but fell short by a few points on other criteria. The Department will review whether the use of a new assignment and rubric had an impact on the results.
