SAN JOSE, CA – Before the holiday break, students at Gateway School in Gilroy spent part of their afternoon playing on their new inclusive playground. The ribbon-cutting on Friday, November 21, celebrated the culmination of a two-year project that included input from families, school staff, and educational leaders.

“A playground is more than a space for play. It’s a space for students to have a sense of belonging and a space for making connections with their peers,” said County Superintendent David M. Toston, Sr. “I’d like to thank everyone who worked together for our students.”

The playground features inclusive and adaptive equipment for children. For example, there are three different types of swings and a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round. Additionally, the playground features noise-making elements.

“I’ve been honored to witness the hard work that went into this multi-year project,” said Gateway Principal Robert Whalen, noting that November 21 was the first time the students could play on it.

The Gateway School serves children in special education.
